We had a fantastic time at the Year 5 & 6 mini soccer tournament playing against 11 teams from across Derby City. We took two teams to the tournament at Mackworth Sports Centre and with lovely sunny weather had a great afternoon out on the astro pitch.
We were split into three groups for the first stage and luckily weren’t against each other. Our A team won two and drew one match so we were pretty sure we would be through to the quarter finals. Our B team played extremely well and won one, lost one and drew one but unfortunately didn’t have enough points to get through to the next round.
The quarter finals were tense, by full time we were drawing 1-1 so were given a golden 5 minutes, next goal wins. By the end of the 5 minutes no one had scored so it was down to penalties! Our goalkeeper, Dean was fantastic though and we breezed through to the semi finals after some fantastic penalties scored from Omari, Kiedis and Isaac.
The semi finals were another tough match, with it 2-2 by full time so it was another 5 golden minutes with the next goal to win and we scored! By this point the team were getting tired, they had played 3 matches back to back and had chance for a quick rest and a drink before the important Final. The game was tough and we kept a tight defence throughout and by full time it was 0-0. We were given the golden 5 minutes and still we were 0-0 so it was onto penalties.
We got through the first round of penalties and were even so it was through to sudden death, which we got to our seventh player and unfortunately lost on our final penalty. The team played fantastically together and both teams that got through to the final are through to represent Derby City in the County finals so we still did extremely well and really enjoyed it. Well done to everyone that played!
