At Landau Forte Academy Moorhead, our approach to our whole school curriculum links directly to our vision of: DREAM, BELIEVE, ACHIEVE. Our overarching aim is for the children within our wonderful community to experience the challenge and enjoyment of learning within a safe environment.
We aim to provide a wealth of first hand learning experiences to allow our children to become critical thinkers, creative individuals and resilient learners.
We celebrate and welcome unique individuals through our curriculum and ensure core knowledge is taught across our whole curriculum so our children can embrace these differences within society. This is built upon with our core concepts, skills and principles, which are encompassed by our- 'Be Brave, Be Curious and Be Kind’ values.
We strive for our children to understand the purpose and value of their learning and see its relevance to their past, present and future careers through a coherent sequence of knowledge and experiences.
Our knowledge – rich curriculum has been jointly constructed with experts from the well renowned educational professionals Cornerstones.
Discrete subjects such as: history, geography, Science, RE, Art and Design and Technology have been constructed to form relevant and appropriate links where possible.
Each project has a curriculum driver whether it be a historical or geographical focus. All of our knowledge rich projects follow a consistent structure of: Introductory knowledge, Memorable experience, Engage, Develop, Innovate and Express.
Introductory Knowledge – This is where the children are introduced to their topics knowledge organisers with a summary of key content they are going to learn. There will be videos to support this and teachers will use a range of retrieval strategies to support the children in learning this.
Memorable experience – Children will either have an educational visit, a speaker visit the children in school or virtually or produce a creative piece of learning linked to their project.
Engage – Children will have the opportunity to deepen their knowledge through a range of learning experiences. This will focus primarily on knowledge highlighted in our knowledge organisers.
Develop – Children will have the opportunity to apply the knowledge acquired to study particular skills in more depth.
Innovate – Our children will use this part of the project to learn how to think like geographer, enquire like a historian or work scientifically like a scientist. Examples of this will be fieldwork, analysing artefacts or carrying out science experiments.
Express – This is where teachers will have the opportunity to assess what the children have done through a range of formative and summative assessments approaches.
To enhance and provide a range of specialist provision within our curriculum:
- We have formed a fantastic partnership with Derby County Community Trust to support our PE curriculum whereby staff have the brilliant opportunity of teaching and learning alongside coaching experts to improve their own practice. This curriculum has been sequenced to build on key fundamental skills of movements leading up to competing in competitive regional tournaments in a range of sports.
- Embedded within our music curriculum, is the support from the Derbyshire Music Education Hub. We have specialist peripatetic teachers to deliver a range of instrumental lessons to whole classes, small groups or 1:1 sessions free of charge to our children. To support us in the delivery of the national curriculum, we use Charanga
to provide a clear knowledge and progression of skills through the different strands: singing, listen and appraise and playing instruments.
- Our PHSE curriculum offer aligns with the PHSE association and supports our whole school approach to personal development.
- To support our delivery of the MFL curriculum, we access ‘Language Angels’ where our children learn French. They learn key skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing throughout KS2. In KS1, though not statutory, we ensure children have the opportunity to learn basic French language knowledge through the use of songs.
